The most compelling way to understand synchronicity is to look simultaneously at how the human mind works and how it interacts with the fabric of reality. What we call “meaningful coincidences” are not proof that the universe rearranges itself specifically for us, but rather the appearance of patterns that become visible when the mind enters a particular state. This state is the rare “gap moment” in which we momentarily slip out of our evolutionary, cultural, and biological thought patterns.

Normally, the human being thinks through millions of years of evolutionary reflexes, thousands of years of cultural conditioning, and a lifetime of personal memory. These layers protect the mind, but they also limit it—acting as a filter. We don’t see reality as it is; we see it through the structures our mind already knows. As a result, the subtle patterns that exist in the flow of existence often remain invisible.

But when a person reaches a threshold in life and sincerely asks, “How am I going to do this?” a small rupture opens in this filter. The mind steps out of what it thinks it knows and shifts into uncertainty, openness, and search. In that moment, evolutionary programs loosen, cultural automation slows down, and perception expands. This moment of cognitive openness is the threshold through which synchronicity becomes perceptible.

Synchronicity does not show that the universe is human-centered; instead, it indicates that when the mind becomes ready to align with reality, it finally notices the patterns that were always there. This is why synchronicistic events feel like signs “coming to us.” In truth, the signs were always present—we simply gain the capacity to see them when the mind enters a specific state of awareness.

Thus, synchronicity is not a supernatural miracle but the natural result of the human mind temporarily transcending its layers and coming into contact with the inherent order of existence.

Wild how Jung runs a giant astrology experiment just to prove synchronicity, and the universe basically leans in and says, “Oh, you’re paying attention now? Cool, watch this.” The part that gets me is how the strongest results showed up when Jung and Pauli were the most emotionally invested. Once they got bored, the cosmos clocked out too. That’s not astrology working. That’s the psyche tugging on reality like a kid shaking a vending machine for extra snacks.

I’m seeing these so called angel numbers as well; constantly and consistently. My most frequent ones are 444, 4444, 333, 2222, 222, 1111. Most times I wake up, pick up my phone to see what time it is, and I get 0707, 0808, 1515 and so on. These types of situations are most interesting. I don’t know if it’s just my brain seeing it once then locking in on it or if it’s really something. When it happens, I just stop for a moment and acknowledge it, say my thanks, and hope it means something good…maybe…

Thank you for sharing! If it’s helpful, those numbers can also be interpreted as moments/signs of psychic integration. I can offer you a personal interpretation based on my own experiences: 4 alludes to quaternity, suggesting a synchronicity that points to the completion of a stage. After 4 would come 1, which represents the unity — the wholeness of the integrated self — as if saying “everything is connected to the same source.” 3 is linked to the triangle, the trinity; it is a stage before individuation and after duality (2), when one begins to see beyond the conflict. 2 represents duality between consciousness and the unconscious, between yin and yang, masculine and feminine.

Thanks! I’ll keep this in mind going forward. I usually look for the context in a given moment: what was I thinking of when I saw the sequences. I’ll incorporate this now as well.

How fascinating. I’ve had many synchronicities happen this year. At times overwhelmingly so…. Making me question things. This one though is clear, like the translucent white ant I saw crawling alone on my dresser yesterday (“how weird!” I thought, lol). An opportunity has presented itself to me this week and I’m going to shoot for the stars!!

I have seen repetitive numbers for years. When I speak, I hear the same word from the TV within seconds. Yesterday I was leaving a comment about a specific subject on someone's notes. When I refreshed the page, an article appeared with exactly what I was saying. Just yesterday I shared that I experience so many synchronicities here, and just now your article was on my feed.

I think it's important to note that this result has not been replicated, despite the experiment being repeated multiple times with larger sample sizes.

Not saying this disproves Synchronicity but you cannot count a single study (even by the man himself) as evidence and dismiss the others.

I just experienced a synchronistic event whilst reading your note. My father passed on 11/11 which was also his birthday. Since that day this week it had caused me sadness, until today. I regularly see double … triple numbers… I’ve never considered myself very math-minded, but I spent some time teaching in the Waldorf school and developed a love of the number sense because I’ve always held a value for numbers that feels different — they hold quality and meaning beyond their functional applications.

Birds - I also feel a synchronicity with bird sightings. They feel like messengers.

This experiment reminds me of a well known phenomenon from evolutionary biology called Assortative mating, where certain type of people tend to mate with certain type of people, more that would be expected to happen by a random chance. This phenomenon is known to happen in most animal species. For example, a certain type of mice will mate with certain types of mice, because they stem from same ancestral population, etc.

Now, these are patterns that pair animals with similar or complementary traits, and since we are animals, the same happens in humans. The evidence for assortative mating in humans is widespread and robust, where individuals frequently choosing mates who are similar to themselves across a range of genetic, physical, psychological, and socio-cultural traits.

This might put Jung's ideas of synchronicity in perspective, opening up some interesting questions.

I've written an article about this if you're interested, with sections dedicated to explaining mating patterns from the perspective of Jungian typology : https://open.substack.com/pub/jamesberryhill/p/phenotypic-patterns-in-human-mate-3ca?r=xfut8&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false

James Berryhill's avatar

Thank you so much for the reply. I've been digging into both Jungian depth depth psychology and assortative mating for the past years, I've found many patterns where biopsychosocial features converge into neat "packages" that are hard to miss (when you know where to look, of course). Assortative mating may even be Synchronicity in a sense that our biological bodies operate within different "frequencies", transmitting and receiving bioelectrical and biochemical cues (e.g. pheromones) to others. So when our body senses (through our sensory apparatus) that someone suitable enters our frequency, its triggers positive downstream neural signaling, motivating us to approach the person for reward: "mating opportunity!". So basically, we sense our preferable mates unconsciously, through bio-sensory activity. Each person has a unique body yielding their traits (biology, personality, behavior) that creates its overall frequency. This frequency signals our personality to others, and is received and evaluated by others. When there's a systematic match between specific frequencies, we have assortative mating between certain personality types.

But there is more: if instead of randomly distributed, each person's frequency falls into one of the four discrete ranges of frequencies, and people within these ranges match systematically, then we have assortative mating in a phenotypic group level. Psychologically this can be understood as specific temperaments attracting specific temperaments. So not only would there be patterns of attraction between specific personality types, but also between specific temperaments. That would also give a biological and psychological explanation to both WHY and HOW Assortative mating and Synchronicity occur systematically rather than randomly. Anyway, one thing is certain: we don't know what actually causes us to become attracted to and choose some types instead of others. Which means it's something that operates in an unconscious realm. Like most biology does.

I call these winks & the more I play with them the more multidimensional they become…I especially like taking ‘wink walks’ where I go for an aimless walk letting my intuition direct which street or area I will walk & seeing what winks I get.

I often get ‘called’ to go for a walk at a certain time which usually results in a good wink.

One night I was watching a tarot reading & the reader mentioned a beaver along with some other animals. For some reason that irritated me slightly (a little frisson is often a sign to pay attention).

The next day I was ‘called’ out for a walk…I was about to return home but for some reason I was compelled to walk back down the path I had already gone down for a short distance…where I spotted a big beaver happily grazing away on the grass beside the river. It stayed there for about 5 mins before returning to the river.

I journal my winks in a digital sketch book & it is so fun to see them bloom into multi-day multi-winks!

The more I delight & play with the winks the more I can set them up, & experience precognition.

Like taking a picture of something on my walk(even though part of me wonders why I am taking that picture) & then having the meaning revealed later with the symbol showing up.

Winks help me learn to trust & refine my intuition.

For some reason I was compelled to comment even though I have not been doing it lately.

& I was ‘directed’ to use the word frisson, even though it was not exactly right in that context…but something felt ‘right’ about it so I did not change it.

Then I winked upon a great new post about the word frisson!!! & it was also about the correct usage!!!

Thanks for your part in my game of winks! I really do feel that the more I delight in them, the more I get them…

Golden Imp—your practice is pure magic. There’s something quietly revolutionary about approaching reality like it wants to play with you. Not dominate, not decode—just play.

I love how you described the frisson. It’s such an overlooked signal—the slight crackle that says, “pay attention here.” Your story of the beaver, the tarot, and the ‘unnecessary photo’ forming a multi-wink thread feels like how myth reenters the modern world: sideways, playful, precise.

You reminded me that precognition isn’t about predicting events—it’s about already being in rhythm with the unfolding. Thank you for sharing your mapless map. It’s an invitation.

Astrology works, and it involves not only synchronicity, but the collective unconscious, archetypes, facing the shadow... Jung understood what a powerful tool this ancient art can be. The powerful and wealthy use astrology. The common person is discouraged from learning what it really is. It's much more than a fortune in a newspaper. To any skeptic reading this, investigate for yourself. Suspend disbelief and observe. It may surprise you.
